North Light

The challenge

I teamed up with the Head of Brand and Interior Designer to identify a direction for a modern new bar and restaurant brand that really connects with the people of Chester. The brief evolved into three pillars that would inform our positioning: history, the arts and the local community.

Chester is steeped in architectural history and our venue’s ornate terracotta façade is no exception. The building was host to The Chester Arts and Recreation Trust in the 1970’s and the city is still home to a creative movement today, with a landscape of exciting new arts and leisure concepts popping up. The local community is tight-knit and supportive of its independent businesses, so ensuring the brand is unique and created with the people of Chester in mind is key.

The name North Light was born from the optimal light for creativity, the rich history of Northgate Street and Chester’s proud northern location. The logo is modern and accessible, balanced by a small full stop evocative of a degree symbol. Degrees are used to signify place, temperature and alcohol proof, uniting north, light and the brand’s position as a bar and restaurant.

A primary palette of warm, welcoming orange and nude tones are inspired by the terracotta fabric of the building, accented with complementary blues and greens to really highlight branded artwork in-venue. Stripped back and straightforward printed menus give the venue an independent feel.

I created a system of ‘building blocks’, digitally-painted in geometric shapes with a contemporary nod to the 1970’s. The soft textures set a relaxed tone, give branded collateral character and can be arranged in limitless compositions to encourage exploration as well as provide a practical solution to keeping branded artwork fresh and new. The motifs are repeated within the interior, cut from wood and layered on walls to cast beautiful shadows.
