Illustrating Paul Auster's 1985 detective novel.
illustration
The book’s protagonist lives in New York City, writing mystery stories about the adventures of a fictional private investigator. His grip on reality loosens when he becomes ensnared in a real-life case intended for another. City of Glass explores layers of identity and the protagonist’s obsessive tracking of his prime suspect – the movement and mapping of which inspired this visual re-imagining of his world. The illustration takes cues from the contrast and shadow filled visual language of film-noir cinema in a contemporary style.
